Blanket Guidelines

Fleece Blanket Tips

Knit & Crochet Afghan Tips

Quilt Tips

  • All blankets must be new, handmade, washable, and smoke-free.  This means that we cannot accept store-bought blankets or used blankets.

  • Materials used (fleece, fabric, yarn, etc) should be new and odor-free.

  • All colors and patterns suitable for children are fine.

  • We accept tied fleece blankets, knitted and crocheted afghans, quilts, tied comforters, sewn receiving blankets, and any other kind of handmade blanket.

  • Please keep materials and blankets away from pets!

  • Blankets should be at least 30" x 30" . 40" x 60" is a good general size that suits many ages.  Remember that our blankets and go to children from birth to age 18, so large sizes are very welcome.

  • All blankets must be washed before donating!

  • We prefer single-layer fleece blankets made by following the Project Linus "No Sew Fleece Blanket" pattern, found here: http://www.projectlinus.org/patterns/pdf/NoSewFB.pdf

  • The following video, created by a Blanketeer, shows all the steps to prepare your fleece and fringe your blanket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vEzen4G5n8

  • VERY IMPORTANT: Please be sure to trim the selvedge edge from the fabric!  The selvedges are the odd edges on both sides of the fabric that are part of the manufacturing process.  They often have manufacturer information printed on them, but sometimes they match the blanket.  You'll notice they don't look or feel like the main part of the fleece.  If you buy the No Sew Fleece Throw kits, that fabric needs to have the selvedges trimmed as well.  It only takes a minute to cut them off and makes a much nicer looking blanket.  They are much harder to remove once the fringe has been cut.

  • The best and most needed size of fleece blanket starts with 1.5 yards of fleece fabric.

  • The type of fleece you are looking for is usually called Blizzard Fleece, Anti-Pill Fleece, or Polar fleece.  These are solid, sturdy fleece fabrics that don't require a sewn edge.    Avoid Luxe fleece, Velvet fleece and other super-soft fleeces as these must be sewn.

  • Yarn used must be machine washable and dryable.  Acrylic yarns such as Red Heart Super Saver, Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn, Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, etc are all perfect for Project Linus.

  • Do not use any yarn that includes beads, sequins, or other bits that can be pulled off.

  • Be sure to weave your yarn ends in securely and/or knot the yarn when switching skeins or colors.

  • Quilts may be hand quilted, machine quilted, or tied.  For tied quilts, make sure all knots are secure and the ends of the ties are trimmed.

  • Check, double check, and triple check for pins!

  • Trim all loose sewing and fabric threads

  • Please use appropriate fabrics.  Quilting cottons and flannel are the most often used, along with fleece, minky, cuddle, etc.  Please avoid apparel and home decorator fabrics.  Do not use old clothing, sheets, blankets, etc. in your quilts as all materials must be new and unused.

  • Do not add buttons or other embellishments that can pose a choking hazard.
